Beginners training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Winter Haven, Florida

Beginner's guide

What to Expect at Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class

Nervous about walking in? Here is exactly how a first class goes at Winter Haven Martial Arts Academy — no surprises.

Before you arrive

What to bring and wear

  • A t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings — nothing with pockets, zippers or buttons
  • A water bottle and a towel
  • Short, clean fingernails and toenails, and bare feet on the mats
  • Nothing else — you do not need a Gi to start

The hour itself

How a class runs

  • Arrive about 10 minutes early so a coach can meet you and show you the room
  • Warm-up and movement drills — light, and scaled to you
  • Technique of the day, broken down step by step and demonstrated slowly
  • Drilling with a partner at low speed, with a coach checking your details
  • Optional live rounds at the end. You can sit these out on day one

Etiquette

A few unwritten rules

  • Tap early and tap often — tapping is how you learn safely, not a loss
  • Show up clean, in clean gear; hygiene is a safety rule on the mats
  • Tell your partner and coach about any injury before you train
  • Shake hands at the start and end of every round
